Distributors Announces
The Association of Steel Distributors (ASD) announced that Thomas N. Smith, Sr., President of B & D Steel Company, will receive the 2002 Honorary Steel Man of the Year award. This year, ASD is pleased to bestow its highest honor, an industry distinction, to Smith at a black-tie reception and dinner on Sunday April 21, 2002, coinciding with the association’s Annual Convention at the Hyatt Grand Champions in Palm Springs, CA., April 20 -23. It is an ASD tradition to honor one individual who, through their distinct leadership skills, dedication and commitment strives to achieve excellence for the steel industry and ASD. Smith is a longtime member of ASD. In 1957, Smith first became involved with the steel industry working in the mailroom at Bethlehem Steel. Since that time, Smith has been involved in the industry working at Edgecomb Steel, Corel Steel, B & D Steel, South Jersey Processing and currently as president of B & D Steel. During his involvement with ASD over the past decade, Smith has served ASD as Chairman of the Membership Committee, a member of the Long-range Planning Committee and presently as Treasurer on the 2001-2002 Executive Board. While Smith is a dedicated leader at B & D Steel, he is also a proud familyman. Smith has been married to his wife, Edna, for 42 years and is a father of six children and has six grandchildren. Outside of his obligations at work and home, Smith has been a dedicated community member of Holland, Pennsylvania as a Cub master for 13 years and Catholic youth basketball coach for 12 years. ###
