Association of Steel Distributors Announces
2007 Steel Man of the Year Award Winner:
Cam Smith, Sr., Founder and CEO of Doral Steel

CHICAGO The Association of Steel Distributors (ASD) announces that Cam Smith, Sr., Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Doral Steel, Inc. in Toledo, Ohio as the recipient of the industry’s highest honor, the Steel Man of the Year award. This annual ASD award honors one individual who embodies leadership, dedication, service and excellence in the steel industry. Mr. Smith will be officially recognized and receive his award at a black-tie event taking place at the upcoming ASD Annual Convention on April 5, 2008 at the Marco Island Resort in Marco Island, Florida.

Cam Smith Sr. is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Steel Distributors and has been involved with the association for 30 years since he became a member in 1977. “I’m honored to receive this award and owe a lot of my success to my peers and what I’ve learned as being a part of ASD. Belonging to ASD has been a truly valuable experience for networking with others in the industry, building business contacts and has also resulted in many lifelong personal friendships,” said Cam Smith, Sr.

Cam Smith, Sr. has been in the steel industry since he was 19 and started working in the plant for Lucas Steel. He then moved to Greatwestern Ohio Steel and served as their Plant Supervisor for eight years. In 1967, Smith moved on to a sales position for Heidtman Steel.

After gaining knowledge in various areas of the steel business from the plant operations to sales, Cam Smith put this knowledge to use and started his own steel company in 1975 when he founded Doral Steel. After 16 years of building his successful company, he made the decision to expand and bought out a Japanese steel company in 1991 that was on the verge of liquidating.

Cam Smith has built a solid foundation for his company and has seen continued growth in their 32 years in business. Cam has taken the company from sales of one million dollars annually to more than 150 million dollars in annual sales today. Mr. Smith is a known business leader in the industry and was recognized as the Wholesale/Distribution Entrepreneur of the Year in 1993.

Doral Steel is quite diversified in their offerings and the customer base they serve. They specialize in flat rolled steel products and are ISO-9002 and QS-9000 certified. His son, Cam Smith, Jr., is also in the business and now serves as President and COO of Doral Steel.
