Pulse of the Marketplace

The Pulse of the Marketplace survey provides high–level insight from industry experts in the steel distribution industry.

A select group of ASD members have agreed to respond to each quarter's survey. This will enable ASD to benchmark its results and provide a statistically valid pulse of the marketplace for our industry. The group answered the following questions related to current hot topics in the industry:

  • Question 1: Are your inventory levels up or down from Q4 2011?
  • Question 2: Based on your current inventory vs. sales, your company has less than one month inventory on hand, has two to three months inventory on hand or more than three months inventory on hand?
  • Question 3: How do you expect Q1 volumes (demand) to compare to Q4 2011?
  • Question 4: Where do you see Q4 pricing compared to current mill pricing structure?
  • Question 5: Do you foresee this quarter to be better in comparison to this quarter last year?
  • Question 6: How do you feel the added domestic capacity, as well as the increase in capacity utilization, will affect the stability of steel pricing?
  • Question 7: Has the difference between current published domestic mill pricing and foreign offers lead you to place orders for foreign material?

In this survey, 45 percent of participants said their inventory has increased since Q4 2011. View the results of the survey. If you have a question that you want ASD to address, e–mail it to Editor Frances Moffett. View the results of last issue's Q3 survey.

Mid-West Materials, Inc. Initiates Final Phase of Major Expansion

Mid-West Materials, Inc.'s CEO Brian Robbins recently introduced North America's largest and most advanced Leveltek Stretch Leveling System to a gathering of local and state dignitaries in a ceremony marking the final phase of a multi-year, multi-million dollar expansion designed to bring the steel service center to the forefront of industry competitiveness and capability.

This addition to Mid-West's 240,000-square-foot facility, which includes cut-to-length lines, levelers, slitters and shears, will provide the industry's flattest, memory-free steel up to ¾" thick and 100" wide, from mild to ultra-high-strength. It will allow Mid-West to provide the highest standard in flat, memory-free steel to satisfy increasing demands for extremely high-quality stock required by newer, more sophisticated manufacturing and processing techniques such as robotic laser and plasma cutting.

"This investment will enable us to continue meeting customers' demands for higher quality standards, allowing for manufacturing methods that require increased efficiency and precision. It will also permit us to increase sales to market sectors where we aren't actively present," Robbins said. "More importantly, the new technology will allow us, our customers and U.S. manufacturing to remain competitive worldwide, helping us all retain and create new jobs."

Attendees included State Senator John Eklund (Senate District 18), Representative Lorraine M. Fende (House District 62), Lake Co. Commissioners Raymond E. Sines and Robert Aufuldish, Perry Township Administrator Walter Siegel and Economic Development Assistant Karen Sundy, as well as management and employees of the family-owned Mid-West Materials, Inc.

Production Recovers in December

Provided by Credit Suisse

Despite continued pessimism in some quarters, global crude steel production (in seasonally adjusted terms) looks to be stabilizing, with output rebounding 2 percent in the month of December (0.8 percent YoY sa). While many uncertainties remain, it has become increasingly clear to us that final demand for steel has not fallen as much as many had feared, with the cuts in production greater than the fall in demand. Steel production rebounded in all three key regions. Read the full report.

The Howe & Hutton Report

The Howe & Hutton Report is a monthly publication that provides analysis of legal news that is important to the nonprofit community. The report is a widely quoted authority that keeps the firm's clients aware of new legal developments that may affect them. See highlights from the latest issue:

  • MORE FUEL FOR THE HEALTH CARE COSTS DEBATES: The (federal) Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (“AHRQ”) recently reported that 1 percent of the American population accounted for 22 percent of health care costs in 2009, the most recent data collection period, up from 21 percent in 2008, but down from 28 percent in 1996. Five percent accounted for half of health care costs. The relevance of this and earlier such studies is their use in predicting future health care costs and ways to reduce anticipated costs. The report goes into more detail, noting that of the 10 percent of patients with the highest medical expenditures in 2009 approximately 60 percent were women, more than 40 percent were age 65 or older, and the 18-29 age group accounted for only 3 percent of medical expenditures. The last point illustrates why the insurance industry and proponents of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 are so set on having younger persons among those mandated to buy health insurance.
  • IRS ANNOUNCES 2012 STANDARD MILEAGE RATES: The Internal Revenue Service has an-nounced 2012 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible expenses of operating a car on various business, medical, charitable or moving expenses. The rates are changed little from 2011 Those using IRS standard mileage rates will continue to use 55.5 cents per mile for business travel, 23 cents per mile for medical or moving travel, and 14 cents for medical-related travel by car. See Rev. Proc. 2010-51 and Notices 2011-116 and 2012-01 for more detailed information.
