President's Message: Recession Survivors Welcome Economic Growth

Hello ASD Members:

Recent "pronouncements" by various industry leaders, economists and Ouija board experts have declared that the United States is in a very slow, pronounced recovery period and it will take years to get back to where we were pre–2008. I say that is good news! In lieu of the recent boom/bust cycles, a sustained period of steady, slow growth may just be what this country needs to re–establish itself as a world leader in industrial production. ASD Announces James Barnett as ASD President, Welcomes Other Board Members

ASD recently announced that James Barnett, a 40–year industry veteran and president of Grand Steel Products, Inc. in Wixom, Mich., has taken the helm of the association as its 2010 president. ASD also announced several other changes to its board of directors. READ MORE

ASD Honors Doug Everhart with Prestigious Steel Man of the Year Award

Doug Everhart, president of Greenpoint Metals Inc., Franklin, Ohio, and 25–year steel industry veteran, was named the 2009 Steel Man of the Year by the Association of Steel Distributors (ASD). The annual award is ASD's highest honor.

"Doug Everhart is truly a gentle giant in the steel industry," ASD Executive Director Ron Pietrzak said. "Doug is the kind of guy that everyone comes to know and respect. He is a professional in every sense of the word and is very deserving of the honor." READ MORE

Early–bird Registration Ends July 1

Excitement is building around the ASD 2010 Fall Conference, scheduled for Oct. 21–23 at the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nev. Steel executives from across the nation will converge in Las Vegas for the single most important steel industry event of the year. Attendees will have opportunities to network with peers and hear the latest industry news and projections as well as position themselves for success in the coming months and years.

Most notable is the conference's impressive lineup of speakers, which includes Dan DiMicco CEO, Nucor Steel; Mike Williams, senior vice president, North American Flat Roll Operations, U.S. Steel; Rick Blume, director of Sales & Marketing, Nucor Steel; Keith Busse, president & CEO, Steel Dynamics; and the ASD 2009 Steel Man of the Year award recipient, Doug Everhart of Greenpoint Metals.

The conference committee created a brand new event, combining favorite aspects of previous annual and fall meetings. Members and nonmembers are encouraged to register before July 1 to qualify for the early–bird discount.

Dan DiMicco to Receive ASD's Captain of the Industry Award

ASD will present Dan DiMicco, chairman, president and CEO, Nucor Steel, with its new Captain of the Industry Award Saturday, Oct. 23, at the ASD 2010 Fall Conference.

DiMicco's impressive career with Nucor helped the organization forge an incredible path to the top of the steel industry. DiMicco, who took over in 2000, is known as an icon who knows how to make things happen.

ASD created the Captain of the Industry Award in 2010 to recognize visionaries with extraordinary leadership who have greatly impacted the overall global steel market. Captain of the Industry Award winners must exhibit exemplary vision, extraordinary leadership and have made an everlasting influence to the advancement of the steel industry.

ASD Releases List of Fall Conference Special Events and Activities

ASD's 2010 Fall Conference is a business event, but there is more to it than just high–end educational speakers. ASD is excited to announce the event's schedule of special events and activities.
